In the Gothic period, the classical aesthetical canon of beauty was turned down as sinful. Later on, Renaissance and Humanist thinkers turned down this watch, and regarded as beauty to be the products of rational purchase and harmonious proportions. Renaissance artists and architects (for instance Giorgio Vasari in his "Life of Artists") criticised
